• Sheriff’s office offers help for addiction

  Dubbed the Coordinated Opiate Recovery Effort, or CORE, the program will allow residents to go to the Sheriff’s Office without fear of prosecution and ask a deputy to find them a treatment program. “Anyone possessing drugs or paraphernalia at the time they are requesting help will not be charged with those drugs or paraphernalia,” said Sheriff James Knight.

• Adolescent rural suicide rates on the rise

  In 2013, 17 percent of United States high school students seriously considered attempting suicide in the previous 12 months, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control. The CDC also reported that in 2013, suicide rates in rural communities were almost twice as high as suicide rates in large central metropolitan areas.

• Mobile Crisis teams offer solutions to substance abuse, mental health issues

  Keith Hamm remembers well how he once unknowingly saved a man’s life at a bus stop. Hamm said he found him sitting there in tears, and the man explained how he spent all of his money to buy a ticket to travel there after his ex-fiancée asked him to come back. Upon arrival, the man’s former fiancée said she never wanted to see him again, leaving him alone and with no money left for anything.

• Agencies Seek To Avoid Involuntary Commitments

  A conversation between agencies involved in the involuntary commitment of the mentally ill in Chowan County is helping to create a road map for helping them avoid that fate. Steps in the process would include getting an area Mobile Crisis team involved at an earlier stage and easing the burden on the emergency room at Vidant Chowan Hospital. Playing a key role would be the development of a Mobile Medication Program in the community.

  Adults and children with a serious mental illness and substance use disorders often lead lives characterized by crisis. These crises can potentially cause consumers to relapse, regress, and experience an increase of behavioral health symptoms. This interactive program will include guidelines defined as best practices by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA).
